Innovating the Amazon’s Fish-Farming Activity

This paper concerns innovation with a focus on competitive strategy in fish production in the Amazon. The assumption is the axis of the systemic analysis of contingencies in order to reduce operating costs and gain competitiveness. It is based on Contingency Theory from the perspective of Joan Woodward. The research question is: how can innovation in the competitive strategy context of Amazonian fish-farming are characterized? The Case Study methodis used, with both quantitative and qualitative methodology, and
involved consultation with experts and focus groups. As a result, it can be concluded that innovation is the competitive strategy of this venture, characterized by the breakdown of tradition that perpetuates unproductive or high-impact practices. The idealizers of such practices are recommended to internalize them in the policies of the development agencies. This research provides information on the development of public policies for integrated local development and for managers who wish to develop competitive strategies
in sustainable fish farming.
