This study aims to analyze the impacts of the sugarcane expansion in Vale do São Patrício, a region located in the Central Northern part of Goiás state, Brazil. Vale do São Patrício - the main sugarcane producer area destined to ethanol production - has presented transformations in several aspects in the last years, such as environment configuration, economic dynamics, and in the social structure. In order to investigate possible impacts, we have accomplished and analysed interviews and local observations, gathering secondary information on the 22 municipal districts that compose Vale do São Patrício. The results demonstrated that 70% of temporary crops areas are occupied by sugarcane, thus dominating the landscape and causing rural exodus. They also indicate that, despite economic growth in recent years, the wealth does not result in benefits to the rural population.
