Characterization of the poultry activity in the town of Boa Vista do Sul, RS

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the poultry production in Boa Vista do Sul. This town is the major poultry producer of Rio Grande do Sul state, thus contributing significantly to increase the exports of the so-called “Serra Gaúcha” region and the state as a whole. The methodology employed includes the application of a questionnaire to collect data, visits to rural properties, interviews with producers and people of the region, as well as data collection from secondary sources. The results show that the size of properties of the majority of poultry producers is small or medium. They can be characterized by families that live and work in the same place. This activity is very important for the economic development of the town, contributing to increase the level of employment and per capita income.
