Journal History
In January 1989, with the aid of AGROCERES, the publication Rural Administration Notebooks (Cadernos de Administração Rural) appeared. At that time, RAE, RAP and RAUSP were practically the only Brazilian Administration journals. Even though there was a SOBER Magazine, focused on the publication of articles on Economics and Rural Sociology, the space for related works from the perspective of management was restricted.
In 1988, there were only two postgraduate programs in Rural Administration in the country, affiliated to ANPAD: ESAL (now UFLA) and UFRPE. However, several postgraduate programs were beginning to house studies related to rural administration. Therefore, with the Rural Administration Notebooks, it was sought to create an opportunity for this line of research, attracting articles from all postgraduate programs in administration and related areas of the country that were in tune with the public and private management of organizations directly and indirectly related to the rural environment. Throughout the 1990s, the scope of Rural Administration was expanded. PENSA (Agroindustrial Studies Program) and the agribusiness theme emerged; ABAR (Brazilian Association of Rural Administration) was created and, later, CEPAN (Postgraduate Program in Agribusiness) of UFRGS.
In 1993, ANPAD opened space for a thematic area of "Rural and Agroindustrial Administration", highlighting the growth in the number of researchers anchored in postgraduate administration programs in various centers in the country. This area remained active until 1997, when, in ANPAD's view, it could be replaced by others. This was a natural move within ANPAD and ENANPADs. If we look at the history of the event, many areas emerged and were later replaced and encompassed by others. In the specific case, it was considered that the subject of agribusiness could be addressed in most other areas, such as human resources, finance, marketing, organizations, among others.
From 2000, with the change of focus of the UFLA Graduate Program in Rural Administration for Administration in general, it was proposed a name that encompassed both the term Rural and the term Organizations: Organizações Rurais & Agroindustriais ("Rural & Agroindustrial Organizations” - OR&A). Thus, in this period, the Rural Administration Notebooks gave rise to a new journal that could reflect the changes in the UFLA PPGA, including articles on both the rural and agro-industrial themes, as well as on other topics related to ENANPAD areas. From 2005, Organizações Rurais & Agroindustriais became a quarterly publication, with 30 (thirty) articles / year, mostly unpublished, with the possibility of submission and publication in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.
Among so many generalist journals in Administration, OR&A is the only in the country to privilege questions about rural productive units and public and private organizations that, directly and indirectly, are linked to the rural environment and the agroindustrial system. Although its editorial line reflects the roots of UFLA and the values that have made it nationally recognized for its excellence in agrarian sciences, it can also be said to reflect the technological and organizational development of rural, agroindustrial productive activities and its network of relationships in our country.
In June 2007, combining history, editorial consistency and continuous improvements, Organizações Rurais & Agroindustriais was classified as National A by the Qualis/CAPES system, re-classified in 2009 as B2 by the new classification system. In 2011, in another important step in its development, the magazine adopted the electronic submission system and was only published online.
In 2012 the magazine was classified as B1 by Qualis/Capes and, in the review made in 2013, OR&A was again classified as B2, under the justification of the need for internationalization. It should be noted that, in 2014, the magazine started to have quarterly edition with approximately 06 (six) articles by number.
From the second half of 2019, OR&A will experience profound transformations aimed at its internationalization and indexation in renowned indexing bases, as well as the expansion of its reach and dialogue with society in general. Initiatives with such objectives include expanding translation and publishing articles in English or Spanish; the holding of special editions with themes of global interest, in partnership with different organizations; the publication of articles approved in the continuous flow mode, in order to promote the speed of the editorial process; and dissemination of approved works or abstracts of their content on social media and others.
